Fun fact just learnt: Capitol Records in the US, who infamously passed on The Beatles for a year, released Freddie's "I'm Telling You Now" in October 1963 (two months before "I Want To Hold Your Hand")! It flopped, as did "You Were Made For Me" five months later, and Capitol dropped them. Capitol subsidiary Tower reissued both records in 1965 with far greater success, though by then the band had signed to Mercury.

I'm on board with your XTC take. Many people whose taste I respect love them, but to my ears, it's all so... clean. And they sound like they think they're more clever than they actually are.
Also, fuck James Taylor's music.

Approx. 90% of Rush's 70s and 80s catalogue.
I have spent the month or so trying, seeing if it will click... but no.

Is that to say you liked their later material?

I also recommend (again!) the documentary Beyond The Lighted Stage. I only really like a bit more of their musical output than you do, but it's a fun doc regardless. (I think I'm gonna have to read Geddy lee's new memoir, too.)
