It's almost like he's inviting onlookers to shout 'TAKE THAT STICK OUT YER ASS!' (or whatever it is Americans say) - the album is so worthy, so ponderous, so lacking in joy and zip.
But...I dunno. I've come to really admire Cave in recent years after sort of dallying with his darker earlier stuff when I was in my late teens. In many ways (don't gag!) he's a real artist. At least in the sense that a) I don't think he could do anything else, and b) he really appears to GIVE so much of himself in these songs. Not that that means they're necessarily any good - but, you know, he's trying for something. There's ambition there, and it's not compromised. They reflect a particular mood very well.
I can't say I've really listened hard to this latest offering, but I was playing it while I was cooking earlier and there were moments that made me look up and go 'fuck! that's really special'. It's a brave piece of work from an artist who seems to be moving closer to the margins, and yeah, I know that's maybe not enough, but I'd be interested to hear what you think. Especially if - unlike me - you've actually devoted some time to the thing.

Have yet to check this out...Need time to listen all the way through...Was hoping it wasn't another 'Skeleton Tree', but from the reviews, it seems it skews in that direction...Maybe he can conjure up another Grinderman album to placate that need for sleazy, faster pace Cave...

It's difficult to judge these albums released in the wake of genuine personal tragedy. At some level I've just got a crass instinct to see if it's as upsetting as Mount Eerie's A Crow Looked At Me. Which it isn't; nothing is. But is that a valid criticism that Nick doesn't break me down, when it's not about me? Anyway, on pure musical terms, I'm not convinced. His voice is given centre stage, and it's a great intimate, personal performance, he's clearly putting everything he's got into it. But I'm finding those drones hackneyed, it seems like the music is distinctly less important than the words.

I can’t seem to find the right place, time and frame of mind to listen to this one lately...
I think I might prefer to see and hear him perform it live rather than listen to it on my own.
Barcelona anyone?

It's his worst album. I don't know why he still bothers calling it "The Bad Seeds" since it's mostly the Nick and Warren Ellis show these days. I'm truly dumbfounded over the great reviews it's been getting.

I don't wanna dump on Cave at all because i feel exactly the way you describe, JC - he's someone who creates music very much from within as an artistic form of exprssing things, and i generally like to cut people who can do that, and have done it well, some slack.
But his music has been a case of diminishing returns for ne for quite some time, no mate how much some of the critics salivate over his ever release.

He's been a critical darling for years now. All these 5 star reviews. Bloody documentaries.
I knew it was a con. I trust you Fange. You're my kinda guy.
(I've warmed to him as a person though I have to admit)

New Nick Cave are three words that make me shudder.

I don't think he's interested in creating exciting new music any more. He lets Ellis use his left-over soundtrack work and they craft something out of that just to get some product out on the market. I'm sure they'll be another documentary coming too. He still loves performing and the money but he's more interested in other things these days, like hanging out at fashion shows and living in LA.

I think the joy of creating music has left him. I took a lot of abuse for sticking up for Cave on BCB but I think his inspiration has finally dried up and now he just wants to make money. He's had a good run.

Anybody off to see him on the tour? I'm booked for Glasgow in May.
I can't imagine this Ghosteen stuff working well with an arena full of fans. Then again...
