The ability to watch endless lectures given by academics of considerable note is a gigantic resource.
Yes, it's not the sort of personal tuition that you can get at uni, but the sheer range of opinions and perspectives can only help you build something.

the best self qualification in life is common sense. there are surprisingly few who pass the grade. You're not one of those people who says 'I graduated from the university of life" are you? a little bit i suppose. i've met so many people who have had a good education but who are clueless when having to deal with the real world.

That is no doubt true. I have a few friends who spunked their free uni education by getting pissed and ending up with a 3rd from some pisspoor poly in something they ultimately had no interest in.

Oscar Wilde said 'youth is wasted on the young, but if you replaced youth with education it would be even truer.

This is everything. Why then do so many seem to be incurious? self satisfied overwhelmed not focused not that bright other ambitions, or no ambitions Jesus , first it's bread making maketh a man and now this. Seriously, take it out of your ass now and again. Go outside and meet real people and engage. After awhile it will sink in that their expressions are a direct result of what you say. It will help you grow.

This is everything. Why then do so many seem to be incurious? Where’s the motivation? What’s the point for the average person to educate themselves about X, Y or Z? Unless it benefits them in a tangible way why bother?

Pontificate Jimmy Pontificate oh wise one (eyeroll) I like you well enough but , you know, you come across as Phoebe's kooky boyfriend in friends or the slightly awkward mission leader for the the third rock from the sun cast. You seem to be confident in your views and statements but they rarely follow any logic or even a semblance of understanding. It is a case of any subject you have a wiki- ism in your back pocket. I don't and cannot remember any type of an emotional response or post from you. You don't have to have lunch in the car everyday or e-mail the guy at the next desk instead of talking. I guess I struggle with your apparent ignorance that you may feel you have a grasp on EVERYTHING and yet it never seems to come from you. Sos.

Most people aren’t Into films.
In the same way most people aren’t interested in economics or astronomy.
Some people are motivated to learn and know things for the pleasure of learning and knowing things but many aren’t. Some people are curious and hungry, others are lazy and incurious.

COME ON DOUGIE Films benefit you though. They give you something fundamental and important in your life yes? For many others they fulfill a different role therefore why learn more? Why read about a certain director or watch a documentary about Japanese films?

Yes, but I really meant just the idea of checking something out, even if it's just sometimes a quick look online. Not just knowledge'.
If someone recommends a film to you - you wouldn't just go 'ah right', would you? unless they were simple
All of us do this, I think.
