Sorry, Dad sorry bout the bread thread, the 80s thread, etc., I haven't memorized all your internet rules. I will try to do better. Nah, it cuts you to the bone criticism, to the very marrow.

Yes, but I really meant just the idea of checking something out, even if it's just sometimes a quick look online. Not just knowledge'. If someone recommends a film to you - you wouldn't just go 'ah right', would you? unless they were simple All of us do this, I think. If someone is enthusiastic about something, real ale, Kurosawa or Northern soul, anything really then I tend to have a deeper look into something. I guess I am passed the seeking of culture vulture recommendations or critical praise. There seems to be a dullness and possibly soulless aura around academics. I am just naturally curious. Truth is you never know what floats your boat until you find it.

Exactly.
Out there, there are books, films and music that will make your heart sing. Go out and find them.

Not sure if i should be honored or not for all the attention you have devoted to me. But maybe that is the crux of it, it's a fucking internet forum to post about interests. Maybe you are expecting too much, you know, live life, you moved to Greece to police people on the internet you don't agree with? Funny, sad... at least try to enjoy the holidays, have some bread, it's the staff of life. Better yet make some bread, kneading will help that pent up aggression. I hope I have not stepped out of line too far with all your internet rules. Didn't mean to hurt you. Love, Elon

Where’s the motivation? What’s the point for the average person to educate themselves about X, Y or Z? Unless it benefits them in a tangible way why bother? It's an interesting question. In some strange way, there is something enriching and nourishing in acquiring knowledge. I agree. It's about self improvement. Trying to maximise your potential. There is satisfaction in that. But most people are limited in what they are interested in and have limited time and energy to spend gaining extra knowledge. There is a difference between knowing a lot about, say, videos games because you enjoy playing them and subjects that you don't necessarily have an interest in but you decide to learn more from an academic pov as a means to gain extra knowledge and understanding.

A cursory look at wiki is not the same as being an autodidact

A cursory look at wiki is not the same as being an autodidact I was just contrasting that with not even looking at ALL. My sister is like that. You mention something and she just shows a vague flicker of interest. Always. Yet some people scuttle off quickly to check it out. If it looks interesting they might dig deeper. Mind this is sometimes the difference between people with and without families to care for as much as it is the difference between the curious and the dull-brained

Anyway films can be a great education I was a massive film buff once, these days it's more of a casual interest for me. But I've always been like that in my enthusiasms, I tend to move on to something else in a few years.

People have different priorities. I ken what you are saying though. It’s like why wouldn’t you read a bit more?
