I'll explain it in simple terms, ALL MUSIC IS DIFFERENT YOU LIKE WHAT YOU LIKE NOT BECAUSE ITS TIED TO A SPECIFIC GENRE.
The idea that someone hates an entire genre because of hearing a few tunes by a few bands means the listener has already made up their mind before listening. My biggest peave about people who don't like prog assume its because they don't think the musicians have emotion and feeling in the music. That is a load of Sh*t. Secondly, would be the idea that prog hasn't influenced bands since the 70's is another BS.
Did some bands take it too far? yes but so did bands in other genre. I love how prog bands were picked on for elaborate stages and lighting effects, yet today bands that have elaborate stages, dancers, choreography and people love it. Talk about a double standard.
Prog is just one style of music for me I like tons.

Just turn Davey loose. On one level I get it, and have said similar things myself. BUT...there is such a thing as taste, and if you know your own taste, there is no point in wasting your time with something you doubt you'll like just to prove how open-minded you are. As far as the emotion/feeling thing, I think what's a load of shit is saying someone's reasons for not liking something are wrong. Good lord, how boring would this place (let alone the world at large) be if we all heard with the same ears? Don't know about you, but I can't quantify what's going on in someone's head when they create something. But I'm certainly not obligated to like it just 'cause they're sincere.

I try and give all music a chance, and I've always held the opinions that a) most musicians play music for the love of it, and play what they would like to listen to, and b) that if I don't like something, it's most likely something to do with me than with the music. However, I really can't find anything in the broad church of prog that does anything for me at all. Perhaps Soft Machine vols 1 & 2, but they even decided to call that 'The Canterbury Scene' because it was musically palatable. And it's strange for me, because I do like musicians who push the boundaries (yeah, even musicians that can play, like Ayler & Coltrane). I think for me that it's largely rooted in a style that I dont particularly like, 70s rock, and that all the progressive' elements keep it firmly embedded in that style. Even when the acts embrace a bit of jazz or folk, they don't move from the 70s rock foundation. It keeps the guitars, it keeps the synth, it doesn't bring in the freedom of jazz, it doesn't bring in the earthiness or lightness of touch of folk, it becomes 70s rock++. It just doubles down and becomes more inward.
That's how I see it, largely, anyway. Perhaps I'm just rationalising a kneejerk reaction I have. Perhaps I'm just talking shite to myself on a message board. But I can't find anything out there in the progosphere that's acceptable.

I like a King Crimson track - Red- and I like the the first 4 Tull albums to varying degrees. They always struck me as less prog and more English folk, but what do I know? And I’m sure there are other songs that I like that could find a pew in the broad church. But mostly it bores me. And, in my youth, I saw the classic Yes lineup and ELP and others of that ilk. They mostly left me wishing I had different girlfriends and/or was old enough to go to the bar.

I like the random funky bits that prog bands come up with but there's invariably a left turn into some sort of showy-offy wankery. Then I just keep thinking, "okay, okay, you sure can play...so what?"
Find a groove and stick with it for a minute, I say.
Some of the big riffs are okay, too. But again, why sully that with a goddamn lute or some mess?
