I've never used it. No interest. I've never "followed" anyone, I leave that to the sheep. Still I'm going to have to bite the bullet because I have a couple of business things I need to promote, but I'd rather not bother! What are you promoting? If it is your shop, I'd strongly advise Instagram and really nothing else. Twitter is an entirely different beast. Yes that's one of the things. But I'm also setting up a gardening business. I did try enrolling on Instagram but they said my email was already in use. There's no effective customer service so I reached a dead end on what to do. I'll probably set up an email for my shop and try re-registering.

Unless the email is not is use anymore?

I can't remember the exact problem now, it was a few months ago, but I did all the obvious things you would expect. There was no effective way of contacting them, so I gave up. But I'll try again with a different email.

Instagram for gardening too.
I'd say Twitter is good for brand reinforcement, but otherwise worthless unless you are a conversation starter..ie you are a professional gardener/florist/designer etc.
Good luck with it. My wife uses Instagram very well - there is a real art to it and it works nicely for her, but there is a lot of skill to it.
If you are serious about using it as a tool for your business, then I would highly recommend you invest in a £500+ camera. The Olympus PL8 has a bluetooth function.

Cheers..I can't afford to spend that much on a camera though. I think my photos are pretty strong and professional looking on the whole. There's probably things I can do to improve them (mainly to do with lighting) but that doesn't need a major camera upgrade. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I'm getting that Facebook has made people used to ads. Today's BBC page has an article showing how they allow political shit as well www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-48405661 - although this is a question of allowing individuals (or campaigns) to disseminate shit (free speech is one thing, co-ordinated and managed political fake clips purporting to be truthful are another) rather than the company taking coin and broadcasting propaganda. There's a lulling of the masses going on ... get people used to and hooked on these social media. I understand that, these sites have to be funded somehow. But the nature of social media leaves it too wide open. In the old days (sounding like an old bod) thought direction came from newspaper proprietors. Nowadays it's from whoever has the money to manipulate the many and varied social media, and it's much more insidious. Orwell would have been unamused.

On Sunday and again today, Twitter was saturated with ads. Bad enough the ads on youtube.
I've only looked in twice today. If it continues, and I think it will, I think I'll slowly leave. Or limit it considerably, like youtube.

I follow lots of authors and columnists on Twitter but I barely ever post. I see some darned good commentary on there now and then. It seems to me that Twitter is mostly what we used to call an "echo chamber". Nothing really matters on Twitter until somebody you've heard of "re-Tweets" it.
I hope this "influencer" thing gets a Vikings funeral pretty soon. I mean, on Twitter it's easier to spot but it's amazing that Gwenneth Paltrow can post about putting something in her HOO-HA one day and they'll sell out of that thing the next.
call me naive but I guess I expected more of the internet.

I think there are layers to social media. One part is advertising and the other part is acquiring followers to see your advertising. I also think it depends on the audience you're trying to acquire.
All have ad departments with ad tools. And all have actual people who can advise on advertising.
Facebook - good for older audiences who value brand loyalty. Good ad tools that work for local advertisers.
Twitter - All over the fucking place. Good for consumer brands and buildng recognition. Toby nailed it.
Instagram - Mainly visual. I think the written message, because of its strong visual platform, is hard to get across. Imagery works best in advertising, but you need to reinforce it with a message and that's where I think Instagram falls down. Conversation starter, maybe. I haven't seen any of the conversations go much of anywhere in my experience.
LinkedIn - Finally becoming the B2B networking source it's wanted to be for years. You can really fine tune your direct marketing messages to audiences on there.

I’ve followed him for some time, but I honestly don’t know who he is. I mean, I gather he’s an author, but I’d never heard of him prior to following him on Twitter.

Why would you follow someone who you don't know or know anything about? Genuine question, I'm not trying to be snarky.
