It will always be a very flawed medium for debate, even if was moderated far more effectively. The emphasis on followers means in a sea of opinion you're going to have to post something attention grabbing to stand out, which hardly creates the conditions for rational and reasonable debate.

It's a certain type of personality though that feels the need to share his ill thought out opinions about literally anything with the world, isn't it. It's the person that used to write letters to the news paper and got a buzz from seeing his name in print. With twitter the last barrier was taken away: walking to the mailbox.
I think the time to write an actual letter and the hassle of posting it was giving ample time to, maybe, reconsider.
