I think Wes Anderson’s films are about forgiving people.

It's common to hear Tarantino is self indulgent, which is true, but it's even truer to say he's indulged and that's where the problem really lies. You don't get the impression his shooting script has gone through any of the normal editing, revisions or work these things usually get. Five minutes of Pitt fixing the aerial on the roof or feeding his dog, sure you can keep it in! It makes watching a Tarantino film an odd experience, you watch glazed through scenes that are boring or pointless, and then wake yourself up for the scenes that do work. He's seen as one of Hollywood's last auteurs. In some ways he is. His films are at least distinctively his, for better or worse.

Yeah, sounds right to me D. You know the difference. We all do. That doesn't mean I don't love Pulp Fiction - I really do - but he's not Great like a *insert name of X here*. He is a product of a lesser time.

I don't disagree that he is an auteur but every film is a bit like a double album with him. He has freedom to do what he wants but lacks the self edit function sadly. There is always a side three dip these days.

I think Wes Anderson’s films are about forgiving people. I haven't forgiven myself for watching Grand Budapest Hotel after hating Moonrise Kingdom.

His new one sounds very interesting, but I don't really get him at all.

most obviously "the Royal Tenenbaums" but I think there are scenes of forgiveness and tolerance in most of them.

As much as I liked "Bottle Rocket" I thought "Rushmore" was a breathtaking and original film. I think I was using that as my standard and grading his movies on a curve. I've returned to ones I wasn't keen on and enjoyed them WAY more. I'm not even sure I'd put "rushmore" so far out in front anymore. I've yet to see one (besides Rushmore) in a movie theater. there's one for the bucket list. I think he's like the Cohens - i just love the little ghetto he's made for himself.
did you see "Isle of Dogs"?

Rushmore! I always forget that's his. Saw it years ago and really enjoyed it, couldn't tell you a damned thing about it now other than Bill Murray's in it. I've had the Criterion Blu-ray in my Amazon basket for years. As soon as they do another of those deals I'll get it.
Saw bits of Isle of Dogs but it looked waaaayy too gimmicky. I mean, you've got to draw the line somewhere...

I think my appreciation for his ahem visual style jumped ahead a mile after enjoying his anitmated films. I mean, his movies are goddam puppet shows with actors. GOOD actors, mind you. I've even come around on the stupid shark movie. I know self consciousness is frowned upon by many but I find some of that stuff really rewarding.
the best writing teacher I ever had used to talk about "real toads in imaginary gardens" I think his best films have enough emotion to make up for some preposterously imaginary gardens. in fact, the more hyper-stylized he gets - the more I like him.

I'll admit that the movies don't really run too DEEP. not compared to PTA or Cohens at their best. I guess I'm a sucker for style.
