It's R.E.M. Patchier - much longer career obv - but their highs are generally higher.
Are Supergrass underrated? I dunno. They had some real pop chops.

Are you being an arse again? why would it be a set-up? Nevah! It just seems obvious to me that REM walks this. I'd be surprised if Supergrass gets one vote for every five REM get.

Yep.
Pretentiousness, longevity, and being in thrall to classic rock will always win out

Yep. Pretentiousness, longevity, and being in thrall to classic rock will always win out I am not a huge fan of either. I don't see REM as particularly pretentious if that is what you're referring to. Longevity, well what can you say about that? It's simple really. I can easily think of 10, maybe 15 songs of REM that I really love. If you then try to pair those with similarly strong songs of Supergrass I'd struggle to come to even five. Maybe I am wrong - I often am - but can you mention just one Supergrass song that beats anything REM put out?

Weren't Supergrass as in thrall to classic rock as REM?
Can't say as I'm a fan of either, but I really dislike most Supergrass songs I've heard.

R.E.M were more singular. People do tend to value longevity over shorter bursts of inspiration. In the same way that some people value albums over singles.
But...R.E.M made better albums and their individual highs were higher. Plus there is more of them which does count for something.

Whilst they have a number of songs I like, REM have always been overrated. There's not much variety to what they do but they push that Mojo classic rock sensibility for a lot of people. There's something quite conservative about what they represent. Supergrass are zippier, come up with better melodies and riffs and have a sense of playfulness missing from REM. Easy victory.

It's better than what REM do best

Murmur – Automatic – Monster – Up
I have time for Supergrass and think they did some fantastic stuff but….
Perfect Circle Rockville Try Not To Breathe Find The River Fall On Me
And a good few others just go a bit deeper than Supergrass.
