Even without loud guitars he demarcated "hard rock" (roughly 16 years before the term existed) simply with his voice (take after take, nailing it). ALL HAIL! RIP.

Ed Sheeran appeals to dimwits and arseholes who for some unfathomable reason want their “pop stars” to resemble a Weatherspoons barman No wonder the world is fucked Yeah, I mean, he’d be ideally suited to advertising Ginsters pasties But as horrible as I find his music, at least he plays his guitar and writes his own songs. I don’t begrudge him his success. He’s irrelevant to me, until my boy puts on the radio. Then it becomes an issue.

I hear this said all the time, as if it's any kind of achievement! He's created his own genre now - "Odd looking bloke sings soppy shit". Have you seen that Lewis Capaldi bloke?

It is an achievement though. He’s a success, doing HIS songs.

I don't really see iconic status as similar to successful status, sometimes like the Beatles, Hendrix, etc., they meet. I think film and photography play an important role in iconography which may be overtaken by memes currently, so that definition may change. "Distinctive ness" with a "possible price paid" also figure into mythology and iconography, I don't see that with most current white commercial pop acts.
