There is a sense of a lot of stuff, whilst not exactly shovelled down one's throat, being laced with wokery. Sometimes it's overt and sometimes it's not. But it is there. It still produces top of the line programming but the reality now is that for me I'd rather watch a YouTube channel than a BBC doc most days. Give me examples of documentaries made on youtube. And no one bloke speaking into a cam doesn't count.

Channel 4 used to be good though! That's declined too.

It still produces top of the line programming but the reality now is that for me I'd rather watch a YouTube channel than a BBC doc most days. I was watching Frankie Boyle's tour of Scotland and it was gentle stuff, observations about quirky locals, that sorta thing and I was enjoying and then he got to Glasgow and it became quite somber and serious and it was all centered around the slave trade. It then became preachy, lecturing, patronising so I switched off. You see it in their entertainment shows like Doctor Who (youtube some of that and see what fans think about the show these days). Look at the football page and how stories of women's football teams nae cunt cares about are the headlines now or how the fact that some footballer comes from a refugee background is football "news" when it's nothing of the sort. But they cannot stop themselves now and this combined with the decline in quality and general focus on yoof over every other demographic is what is causing them issues and why people are switching off.

They're suffering in a multi-channel age. They need to get back to the core of what they do well.

The Kids are into Netflix, they have moved on. The BBC chasing them will backfire but they seem to think it's necessary for their survival.
Too much shit is targeted at kids these days. It's tedious.

Before we get any more of these pronouncements...what do people think the BBC (thinking mainly of the two main channels) has produced of value in the past?

It's down to market research and demographics and all that shite. I often question just how exact science that is. Stats aren't as factual or influential as some people believe.

What's wrong with you?
People are saying 'it's not what it was' - OK, so what WAS it?

But their strengths are documentaries and drama in my opinion.

I don't have time to give you a long list of programmes. But just on the last few pages of the 'Now Viewing' thread I've mentioned enjoying Simon Reeves travel documentaries, The Story of Welsh Art and Line of Duty.

OK - thanks.
I was thinking more about what the BBC has done in the past, the sort of programmes that lead some of us to say 'it's the best public broadcaster in the world'. Civilisation, for example, or Fawlty Towers. That would help to see what expectations we have of it, what kind of things we value, and how far back we need to go to find the last examples of greatness.
I like those Simon R documentaries too. I don't think they're quite as good as Palin's. Or Alan Whicker's!
Does Louis Theroux still make programmes for the BBC? or is he freelance?

'The BBC is crap' etc. We always do this here. Someone starts a thread and everyone charges in to say what they think. Sharing the opinion is more important than anything else - including knowing what the fuck the discussion is about!
