No mention of Tony Bennett passing? Not a big enough fan to start a thread. Can't say I was a fan particularly, but at Glastonbury in '98 it was quite an experience to be amongst the saucer eyed, shit caked throng, on the third day of indulgence and debauchery to be watching this guy in an immaculate three piece suit, a drummer with brushes, stand up bass etc. . running through these timeless standards. A class act.

Heard this for the first time 12 years after it was released. I really like it.

Can Grimes be referred to as The XX now?

I liked it a lot at time time. Can't believe it's that old already.
I didn't follow her after that album but that song is golden.
She's clearly batshit.

I'm not really sure why @beatlemaniauk twitter account posted this AI pic of "John", but people don't seem to be too thrilled by it...

I don't know if I posted about this before, but a couple of weeks ago I got back on discogs after more than two years away. There's lots of tales of derring-do (and rank incompetence - I've already sent the wrong record (by the right act) to two people, AND had to cancel two orders because I couldn't find the fucking things, despite having worked for two or three days sorting them all out) that I'll put in that thread when I did it out, but this is just to say that someone has just bought my vinyl copy of Safe as Milk that I've owned for more than fifty years, and I feel decidedly odd, even conflicted about it. I shall take out the dog for his nightly empty, and ponder further.

Interesting clip on Guy Stevens, pre-Mott The Hoople:
I recall a story (possibly from an Ian Hunter interview back in the early '80s) that Chris Blackwell hired Guy as an A&R man at Island in the late '60s, but eventually fired him for not signing anybody. Guy tried to convince Chris that he'd actually saved Island a lot of money by not bringing them any CRAP.

I only just found out that Mike d'Abo - singer with my favorite edition of Manfred Mann, writer of "Handbags And Gladrags", sang "King Herod's Song" on the original Jesus Christ Superstar album - co-wrote "Build Me Up Buttercup"!
Nothing astonishing about that, I suppose - beyond the fact that I somehow never knew it before now.
Pardon my Googa.

Something I learnt today: Christopher Cross wrote the lyrics to "Ride Like The Wind" during an acid trip.

Must not have been very powerful acid.

Some critic (Christgau, I think, though it may have been Christgau quoting Randy Newman) called A Horse With No Name a song about a kid who thinks he had an acid trip.

Thanks for posting. I don’t really listen to much of what he’s been associated with. Not for any reason, other than lack of exposure to it, but I’ve been aware of ‘him’ forever. I’d like to be a fly on the wall at one of his recording sessions, and compare the experience to, say, a Bob Rock session. I’d learn a lot in both situations, I’m sure.
