misogyny has become a preludin buzz-word.
lots of accusations flying around and an undercurrent which is palpable.
aftermath and between the buttons are probably my two favourite stones albums, but their view of women goes against the grain.
under my thumb stupid girl out of time yesterday's papers backstreet girl
etc.
is it possible to separate the art from the sentiment?

Although I like the Stones, it is high time that they were cancelled.

Misogyny and cultural appropriation. Guilty as charged! Take them away!
*puts on We Love You*
(funnily enough I was listening to Stupid Girl by Neil Young today which reminded me of the Stones song).

if the court pleases, the defense would like to call to the stand a series of witnesses both vintage & current. Our aim is to show that such creatures do exist.

I love the Jones Stones era, the songs are problematic, but most are NOT that good either, except Thumb, possibly. So it is not hard just dropping them. However, 70s Stones does go on to unfortunately confirm misogyny as Mick's POV.
I cut out Hey Joe from Hendrix back in the late 80s because of the matter of fact justified killing aspect of it.

Well, they used blues as their foundation which was rife with that stuff and they were in their early 20s in the mid '60s.
I'll give 'em a pass.

writing teachers say to write about what you know. the Beach Boys wrote songs about cars. the Stones wrote songs about stupid groupies.

I get the matter of fact, I don't get the justified. Joe told me what he was doin' and he told me why. I'm just tellin' you what Joe told me. some people write songs about sunsets.

When someone writes this, I always harken back to an interview I heard with Smokey Robinson. The interviewer asked, "Did your mom really tell you to shop around?" Smokey's response was, "My mother died when I was seven, so no."

But we are not talking about shopping and sunset, we are talking about a guy who feels hurt and feels it is okay to kill his girlfriend. The song is not in a vacuum it is built upon a huge body of rock/pop songs about men being aggrieved at women for hurting them (not just the blues tradition). The women have done the man wrong and she must pay. It plays into larger societal views of women and their rights and roles, some of which have not changed that much from the 50s60s70s, etc., and it is not hard to see it played out everyday in the news of women: mothers, sisters, grandmothers, young, old, etc., killed by men who feel aggrieved. One can put their head in the sand, minimize, etc., but societal norms are reflected and reinforced overtly and subliminally in what is allowed/tolerated in culture.
