How many message boards are you a member of? Just here, BCB, and rateyourmusic, not counting the facebook groups Jeff nudged me into joining.
Is it to chat shit in general? Well, I think I chat general shit here most, there's not much music discussion here that I can take part in. But I like these smaller communities, you get to know people's real personalities, it's like a virtual Cheers bar or something.
Niched boards, music, film, pottery etc? Just music, really, though on rateyourmusic I try to keep up with the literature snobs, too.
Which one have you been on the longest? Rateyourmusic, though it would've been imdb if that was still going. Joined RYM in 2003, been an admin for years, though I rarely do anything other than post on the message boards.
Have you made many proper friends over all of them? I guess I've been on them so long I've made and lost proper friends. Never met anyone on this site, or BCB, but did go on a few RYM nerdcons years ago, in Sheffield and Manchester. Met Madgett from imdb a couple of times when I've been down in that London, but haven't kept in touch for a while. I guess I've known Ray for as long as anyone now, feels like I should've at least had a pint with him by now.

I wished Toby a happy birthday for three or four consecutive years on Facebook - no comment, not even an acknowledgement.
If you ignored someone who made the effort to extend those kind of wishes 'in real life', you'd be regarded as ignorant. So it's clear he doesn't see any friendship forged online as real!

How many message boards are you a member of? five, only post on four, mostly this one Is it to chat shit in general? More gold than shit in my case, M, but also to post photographs Niched boards, music, film, pottery etc? Music and comedy originally, but I use them as general boards Which one have you been on the longest? faltonia in 2012, followed by BCB and Preludin. Was on others before that, but they folded Have you made many proper friends over all of them? Not sure what you mean by 'proper' friends. No friends in real life, but the dozen or two people I consider good friends IRL I've known between 35 and 55 years. Good internet friends, not all of them, no - I only lurk on Cook'd & Bombed, while I'm more or less the only poster on the fifth one, which I set up to share my photos with my friends because it's easier than a blog.
Met Loki, Driftin, pcqgod, JL (rodya), JeffK (I think) and Darkness Fish on imdb in the early noughties and continued on The Refuge, so knew them the longest. Loki invited me to BCB in 2013

Just this one, although there are a couple I look at and some sports and music blogs I look at every once in awhile. I am always amazed of the strong friendships that grew out of BCB. I am friendly with lots of folks on there, but it takes a lot for me to develop a secret handshake that develops into what I would define as a real friendship. Don't get me wrong, I really like a lot of BCBers I've become close to, but friendship is another thing altogether for me. It requires a more frequent personal communication. Most of my old friends are men and women I grew up with. Real friendship requires duration and two-way communication. For example, I reached out to a few old friends at the start of this pandemic, and while they were glad I reached out, they have not reciprocated at all in the ensuring 6-8 months. You may think of this as pettiness, but once in awhile when I think I should reach out again, I think, "The phone works both ways," so I usually don't.

I am always amazed of the strong friendships that grew out of BCB. it provided a platform for nutters to blow smoke up each other's arseholes. smoke they would never have received elsewhere.

Well, I'm also amazed at the marriages that arose from it too. Baron and Minnie Cosmic American Girl and Tony (I forget his BCB name which I should remember) By extension, Hatz and Carolyn

Just here and BCB (and I kinda consider both to be different sections of the same board). I appreciate this message board thing for what it is. Mostly not all that edifying, but sometimes a really good discussion happens in a way that just couldn’t on FB or any other format.
I don’t know that I can say that I’ve made any IRL friends here, but I definitely have made connections with people that matter. There are many people whom I feel like I could contact if I were in their town, and feel extremely confident that they’d be warm and responsive. I DO have a close friend for 20+ years that I met on a baseball message board initially. .
