Well it is distasteful and what point does it serve? I am not easily offended so at these type of remarks I might do a bit of eyerolling if I am in the mood for it but hardly ever would I respond to it. My thumbs up for G's post was in support for the sentiment expressed. Little did I know it would only get worse. 'she should get laid' 'you stole my sexlife' And you all wonder why not more people (womans!) join this board? Yeah why not more women? I guess because of misogynistic men and culture in general the poor little things just don't have what it takes to put the more macho element here in their place. That's a great argument Lou , right on , virtuous and clear as a signal crab looking for a mate. What we struggle with here due to a lack of female posters is shown in part when there was a discussion on what constituted abuse. It was (naturally) approached from a male viewpoint as the female perspective had zero participants. Generally you can make a case that all jokes reveal your politics, views and persona. They don't.Dougie might not have a sense of humour that you approve of but it is just a cheap gag and they arrive here on a daily basis. He also put forward a point of view that from the outside and with limited knowledge accepted that Greta is being exploited and her original behaviour was initially tolerated as a dummy for a screaming child ( as her parents admitted too) or is exploitation of a condition that requires more attention than letting a part of it manifest itself on our t.v screens. We have someone on bcb with the same condition and their wasn't much tolerance or sympathy shown there especially from a female poster. And yet that receives a pass or a vote. I too would like to see more women post on here and I don't know why they don't. I am sure of one thing though , if they did it would be a bonus and they would be treated with respect. I think Dougie and I are of the opinion that everything can be a joke or nothing can be a joke. I would say women are generally less interested in talking about things in the obsessive way we do but I am scared I would be labelled a horrible misogynist. I know someone, a 19 year old with aspergers and it's a difficult condition. Given her depression then it's quite possible her depression was related to it and by giving her a cause, a means to access and become a venerated member of a group it helped her because she was alone and socially isolated therefore it gave her something she had maybe never had before. But that might come with a price too at some point. Child stars don't always grow up normal but the media will have moved on by then. And, yes, you are right, I do like a cheap gag and I think everything is fair game.

Is it really that difficult to type 'Sorry, that was a wrong joke'? Maybe it is more difficult than just letting it go or realising it was just a joke that wasn't to your taste?

I find the whole Greta Thunberg thing weird. I don't know how a teenage girl becomes the figurehead of a global movement, how she became the 'go to' person. I literally don't understand why. Are there people behind her, pushing her, is it of her own making, or just a happy/unhappy accident? But she appears to be on the right side of the argument, and trying to make a change for the better. Is she personally suffering? I don't know. Is her aspergers an issue, I don't know that either. But she does seem to be driven, she appears brave and intelligent enough, and I think it's weird to take cheap shots at her, ignore the issue, then attempt to take the moral highground that it's her interests you're concerned about. To be fair fishy he was pretty much asking the same question. The moral high ground was actually from the joke police wasn't it? I don't think you can ask in the same paragraph is she being pushed and say well, whatever, it's for the greater good but don't make jokes about her sex life. It really isn't weird to take cheap shots either is it now? We do it on a continual basis

Yes, of course, it's because of comments like this that no women join the board (hardly any men do either mind but we'll overlook that). It's funny the things people get bothered by isn't it? Meanwhile posts like this attract no attention at all, no criticism or nothing but I guess making jokes about Greta are a BIG No-No but wishing women dead are fine. The only reason I'd give Katie Hopkins an exemption to fly into Australia is if she was arriving in an urn. A despicable cunt of a human. No wonder women don't join eh? I hadn't seen that post from Red Heider and I don't know who that woman is he prefers in an urn.(...) On the first point, I have no problem with black humour. Black as night as far as I am concerned. The minimum I'd ask is it to be at least funny. As it is it totally lacks that and so what rests is just a cheap shot.

well, I'm not above a cheap shot myself. Instead, I'll just go off on one of my little tangents. Anybody remember Cindy Sheehan? She became an Anti-War activist after her son was killed in Iraq. What was most often mentioned about her at the time was speculation on what her motives could possibly be for being an Anti-War activist. was she a tool of the Left? Did she want America to lose the war? was she insufficiently Patriotic? It was as if the simple fact that her son was killed in that needless conflict could not possibly be a major component of what motivated her. this at a time when parents were digging down deep to buy protective gear for their sons and daughters at war while the defense Industry was getting our tax dollars pumped up it's BUTT. what does this have to do with Greta? Her motivation! Her agenda! People who dislike her are perfectly happy to take cheap shots but they can't possibly surrender any moral ground. so they talk about her looks and pretend they can look into her very soul and see what motivates her.
you should have heard what they said about Shirley Chisolm!

I've tried to choose my words carefully and be polite and considered so we wouldn't get into this kind of argument, but it seems I've failed in that. I don't think you like being challenged on these things, so that gives us the choice of either staying silent when you make these comments or getting into a row. There is also the choice of getting into a discussion. ..which is what I opted to do.

I'd be happy to let it go. It's the doubling down, entrenched sticking your feet in the ground stance we've had subsequently that has prolonged this and turned a molehill into a mountain, rather than my original comment.

I hear ya. Perhaps we could remove the oooof thread and comments and the cheap personal jibe fest that is the members only area that the taste police all seem to revel in. Hypocrisy is the most tasteless thing here.

She is a far right media commentator who has lost libel cases, been banned from Twitter and sacked from various media roles for her inflammatory, hateful and, at times, racist views. The comparison with Thulberg is specious; the only thing they have in common is being famous and female.

But then that line was so obviously inappropriate in my view that I still think it deserved an apology. Does this place me on higher moral ground or being part of the joke police? I dunno, never seen myself like that. I'll shut up next time.

I know you're being a bit sarcastic, but none of us should feel intimidated into silence for fear of the flak we might get.
