Feel like a stuck record now, but good songs done well is the point of a tribute band. No-one is arguing that they have supplanted The Smiths in the public consciousness.

He didn't sing them that well. The band were ok.

Why do we do any of this? I can’t explain to you why I’m still participating on a thread discussing the convergence of two acts I equally don’t care about. At some level, it must be the invitation to naysay. So ‘nay.’ There. I’ve said it! I can’t help but think that the whole ‘music-obsessive’ gestalt is really about claiming the right to confer greatness on one thing and valuelessness on another. It makes us feel important or something. Erm....it's just about personal preferences, you pompous prig. Give us a kiss

You don’t care about either artist - and that’s fine. But The Smiths DID mean a lot to a lot of people- folks who would have condemned Astley to a Dante circle of hell. They were polar opposites of what was (!) considered good taste. That’s why he was up on stage at Glasto; partly to entertain but partly to stick two fingers up at the ‘indie’ crowd that snubbed him 35 years ago. Maybe you had to be ‘there’ ( England) all those years ago, and going through yer teens with either Moz or Rick as your guide. No one’s going to lose sleep over it. At what point are the old wars over? When you’re young and trying to define yourself, maybe you need to choose a guide. But if you get into later years and you’re still attached to all that…what does it say? Formative years. That’s what it says. Those teenage loyalties count for something more than a twenty something dalliance

He didn't sing them that well. Neither did Morrissey. But that's an argument about the quality of the tribute band, not the legitimacy. I think I've wasted too much of my life on this topic now.

Was he booked as 'Rick Astley does the Smiths'? It's one reason I don't have much interest in tribute bands. The very best ones can only - at best - reproduce other people's ideas. I listen to music to hear those ideas. I already know that there's nothing competent musicians can't reproduce within pop music. I will never be impressed by it.

He didn't sing them that well. Neither did Morrissey. He sang them perfectly - because they were his songs.

Yeah, he had a solo set (which was rubbish), and later had a set with The Blossoms explicitly as a Smiths thing. They've been doing it for a couple of years, but not that frequently, and not as high profile as this one. I'm with you on tribute bands, I've no interest. For one thing, you're never going to get an interesting interpretation, just a reproduction. They can't do anything to the source material, by definition.

What's next? "Are you upset that Rick Astley has been performing "Highway to Hell" in concert for a decade now? And he drums!.." Oh the pain..Oh the shame...

I'll just say what we're all thinking. Astley is the devil of music. Pure 100% concentrated evil of music

Not at all. Of course I don't have any solid arguments but it's just that I feel he has no business with Smith's songs. Like someone else says in this thread, it's knicking credibility.
