I see people on Facebook are loving it.
6 pages on Rick Astley singing the Smiths.
Is this peak meta? I honestly don't know anymore.
I feel lost.

Facebook, Twitter, Insta.... it's all 'OMG Rick OWNED those songs!' My mistake was to come on here looking for a bit more sense...😐 It's the elevation of the ordinary. Lewis Capaldi, Rick Astley, Lizzo. You will go along with the Vision and you will submit and if you laugh, complain, mock then YOU are part of the problem you miserable old sod. Welcome to the new pop vision!

Something I notice more and more these days (and I know you feel the same way) - seemingly there's a bit of pressure to be positive about everything that's created for our entertainment, regardless of its quality. I do notice a tendency for people to be less discerning. Nobody seems to want to take a stand against anything. It's all good.
It's funny - in the middle of all this bullshit about gestalt yesterday my nephew sent me a text asking if I'd seen Rick Astley covering The Smiths. So I told him: yeah, it was alright, but I've mixed feelings, 'cos when I was 19 Rick was the enemy. And Jack said 'ah I just thought he was having some fun with some old songs!'. So I left it there 🙂
You know - it's probably not worth putting your boxing gloves on for something like this. But you do end up being forced to take a firmer stand when most people around you - I mean, SERIOUS music fans, for fuck's sake! - are saying 'ah it's only music!'. More so when one of the board's most contrary members says Astley did a good job!

It’s like when someone sends me a clip of Miley Cyrus singing a Dylan song or something. I’m supposed to be amazed that she can basically intone the notes. Or when someone is amazed that “Lady Gaga can actually sing.”
Our expectations are so low that this shit actually floors some people.

It's an age thing too. The fires dim. The principles fade. You care less and things become acceptable when 30 years ago you would have laughed at 'em down the pub. This stuff defined you. In a way and as silly as it can seem in hindsight I miss the passion. In 5 years time we'll have to endure Katy Perry singing the songs of Radiohead. Or the return of Mike Flowers Pops.
But, yeah, the positive culture of affirmation. You see it everywhere these days. The tyranny of the Nice. The cult of "be kind". A Facebook friend of mine commented on the Capaldi thing, and I quote:
"In awe of this guy - his talent and his honesty - and also that crowd. So emotional".
People relate to it but then he's a reflection in a mirror (see also Ed Sheeran). And just the levels of emperor new clothes bullshit that goes on! "Lizzo looks ah-ma-zing!". No she doesn't. You know? The elevation of the ordinary brings everything down but it's beyond our control that's for sure.

Come with me, to the metal shores, where men play their instruments like they are weapons, and they’re not afraid to fucking use them, where the chicks are hot, and they have balls too, and they will take you down, down to Chinatown, and eat you alive with dragon tooth chopsticks whilst raising a glass ( or three!) of 100 degree proof blood. Tattoos optional.
Who’s coming?

I don't know if this is a reference to Lady Gaga singing Phil Ochs. She ruins possibly his finest track, but y'know, it's quietly impressive that she either heard it or was willing to sing it. But I guess I should be angry, going off some of the reactions here.

So I told him: yeah, it was alright, but I've mixed feelings, 'cos when I was 19 Rick was the enemy. Reading this just now, the thought belatedly occurred to me that maybe this is Astley's revenge! You know, "Thirty-odd years ago Smiths fans considered me the enemy and probably thought I was a flash in the pan - but The Smiths broke up, those fans grew up, Morrissey's a miserable racist shit, and I'm here at Glastonbury singing their songs and everyone thinks its awesome!" [sticks up two fingers]

Actually the thought crossed my mind too, Charlie! sadly his post-concert interview showed him to be disappointingly modest and happy about the whole thing...
