Everyone should watch Mark Laita's channel - heartbreaking interviews with people at the bottom. This is a great little eye-opener into him walking around Skid Row. LA - what a shithole.

Laita's clips are extremely fascinating. For instance, those on the Whittakers (an inbred family that lives in a small village called 'Odd' !)
The thing I don't like about it is it makes me feel guilty of watching sensation porn.

Yes, there is that element of voyeurism to it - "I can feel sorry for these people and thank my lucky stars I don't have their life".

The Whittakers stuff is so tragic.

I can't bring myself around to watch the Whittakers stuff. In my teens i would have been a little cunt and probably laughed my head off at them, now it does seem so tragic that it'll be hard to watch.

The one with Victoria, the sex trafficking victim, was heartbreaking.
"I'd already lost my virginity when I was about 4"

Interesting comments at the end of the clip.
Of course there are a multitude of factors that contributes to this problem but I can't help but think there is basically a group of people in our society who will always be deeply dysfunctional and will inevitably fall through the cracks.
We can talk about the influence of poverty, family breakdown etc but I sometimes think we look at these things back to front and see symptoms as causes when they are in fact products of genetic factors that are out with our control.

The number of interviews where family breakdown is cited as a root of trauma does sadden me immensely.

I've known children from, shall we say, dysfunctional families who all have trauma and it's been interesting to see how different their outcomes have been and how they have approached life in general.

I've watched a number of these videos over the last few days and the main theme, to me at least, is the powerful effect of drugs on families and communities. So many stories or anecdotes like a mother saying "I love you, but I love Heroin more".
It is such a heartbreaking problem and I don't think legislation would make one iota of difference either; in fact, I suspect it would make the problem a whole lot worse. To me, the issue is that the acceptance of drugs in our culture is so now powerfully normalised that I cannot imagine it going the other way.

It isn't normalised at all, indeed there is a lot less drug taking in youth culture now then there was twenty years ago, as you should know. Something like heroin overwhelmingly takes place in the poorer communities ( these days anyway...in the old days aristocrats were strangely drawn to it).

I disagree. Even in my school there is an issue with drugs - it's not widespread, but it's there. To say that there is a lot less drug taking in youth culture compared to 20 years ago is laughable in all honesty. Have you not heard of County Lines?

Is that the name of the latest cocaine hitting the street? "Mate, county lines?" "yeah i gotcha, 3 bags for the price of 4, or one bag for the price of 2".
