Looked at the first two minutes and I didn't even smile. Do you like him more for his politics? Well, as a massive lefty I'm not surprised! I'm hardly a "politically correct lefty" Toby. I can laugh at all sorts of stuff that's considered dodgy or reactionary, I just didn't find this guy funny. Humour's very visceral and immediate for me largely, it's not an intellectual process, things either make me laugh right away or they don't.

This section on abortion and Nazis is terrific. It's awkward, thought-provoking and outrageous. ..and almost completely unfunny if that clip is anything to go by. And that's got nothing to do with me being offended, I just don't think he says anything funny, in fact I was getting bored listening to him and didn't make to the end. But we'll see what others think about it..humour can be very subjective.

I like his delivery and general demeanour - which in itself is assured and combative. I guess that I like things in humour that are political and cerebral whereas for example, Jimmy Carr has absolutely no effect on me at all. I mean, he can tell a joke like
"Anal sex is overrated – it’s fucking shit. And it hurts like buggery! I tried it with my girlfriend. She was bored to tears!"
And I'll find it funny in a laugh in the moment way, but it doesn't really have any effect on me beyond that. Him and Boyle dwell in that "stuff that cannot be said" realm, but in fact it's really not that interesting.

Him and Boyle dwell in that "stuff that cannot be said" realm, but in fact it's really not that interesting. Quite often it's fucking tedious. And to a paying crowd, who want to see you perform? 'stuff that cannot be said' doesn't in fact exist in that environment. It's pushing against something that isn't there to push against.

Not as tedious as that clip Toby posted though. Christ, I can't imagine being so defined by my politics that I'd search something like that out.
Jimmy Carr is more a traditional pun guy, doesn't normally go much further than feedline-punchline, though the punchline is often a politically incorrect thought, and certainly not left wing.

When you over announce your intention it takes away from the thrill of hearing the jokes. That's the problem there with Carr. I saw his show about trying to get cancelled and he said worst stuff back in the day when he wasn't "trying" to get canceled.

The best stand-up I've seen live is Dylan Moran, but I feel he's someone you have to see in the room, he never comes across that great on TV, he controls the atmosphere so well. Again, more a traditional pun guy, normally riffing on a specific topic, but throws on a dollop of surrealism and an air of shambolic bafflement.
Worst I've seen was probably Miles Jupp. Seems to nick a lot of his material from other stand-ups, and just didn't have any kind of delivery.

Never thought of him as a stand up, more just a comic actor. I used to fucking hate him back in the day, due to that fucking show Balamory. It was always on when my brother took my baby nephew to visit, to keep him quiet. Fucking hate that show.

What do you mean "so defined by my politics?" He was on the Comedy Unleashed channel - that's how I found out about him. Would you go and see a self-professed but more blokey and amenable right-wing comedian like Geoff Norcott? No? Then you also are defined by your politics in your choices.

Norcott's funny. He has the right balance of taking the pish out of both sides of the divide while never leaving you in doubt which side he's on. Which wouldn't surprise me if that affects his bookings.

Some of the best comedians don't make their politics obvious. I suppose though that with most of them, over time, you at least have an idea of their leaning. That's the case with Billy Connolly, George Carlin, Bernard Manning...

Chappelle is about the only stand up I like -- I've never been much of a fan of comics - comedy movies, yes, comic novels, yes, stand up, no. One thing about comedy is how quickly it dates. Old SNL episodes from the 70's are unwatchable, I thought they were funny at the time. There was a pre SNL movie called The Groove Tube that I saw for the first time in almost 50 years. It was terrible. I thought it was funny when I first saw it - of course, I was probably 11-12 years old at the time. Cheech and Chong - funny in 1973, not funny in 2023. I very rarely find political humor funny - right or left it usually sucks -and left wing humor is less funny than right wing - trying to be nice or shooting fish in a barrel. Humor is more subjective than music. When I was in high school I knew a kid who was sort of a proto-Flanders. He thought the funniest movie he ever saw was the Sound Of Music - in particular when the nuns pulled the battery out of the Nazi's car and said "Forgive me father, for I have sinned." He would unhinge his jaw like DeSantis and bray like a jackass when he thought about it.
