Well, I'm still suck in 2015. This is beyond the point I stopped buying music: last record I bought was British Sea Power's Sea of Brass, released early that year, and while very fine as an album, has no great stand-out track, but fear not, because a band I became fond of a few years later released one of their classic tracks this year...
Babymetal - Gimme Chocolate

2016
Easy peasy (although there were a few others that I could've chosen: Drive By Truckers, Angel Olsen, Mitski, Bowie, etc.). I didn't discover these guys until 2017's Flying Microtonal Banana LP, but I quickly worked my way back through their catalogue and 2016's Nonagon Infinity became an instant favourite.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Gamma Knife

David Bowie - Blackstar I Can’t Give Everything Away
I have no doubt this belongs to the Canon, and I could not choose anything from any other record for 2016.

"On Hold" The xx
A truly unique effort..just edged out a lovely Radiohead song off the underappreciated A Moon Shaped Pool ("True Love Waits"), hardcore Moor Mother, Bowie death throe ("Lazarus") and Run the Jewels..

2016
I still remember hearing Moor Mother's debut pretty much at time of release, and it blew me away. It seemed obvious that a major talent had just been launched, and it annoyed me how it had bypassed most of the music mags' end of year charts. She seems the dominant figure of the underground these days, almost a mark of quality of any release if it has a Moor Mother collaboration track. This is probably the most intense track on the album, seems as much influenced by Diamanda Galas as Toni Morrison.

I just found out that the single Blackstar had been released in December 2015, same as Lazarus, which would have been my next option, so I had edited my pick going for option number 3, equally stellar and representative.

Yes I know everyone is busy, as am I, but what I thought I'd do was open it up until 2019, which I think would be a suitable place to end it seeing as that was the year Preludin sprang into being (5th birthday miseryup scheduled for 4 January), and then perhaps start to implement G's as far as I know not entirely formed plans as to what to do with the results. So end of December is a half-hearted deadline, then. People positively inclined to 2020 voting, just lob them in regardless
Seeing as my knowledge of/exposure to contemporary music has been limited to music forums, I'm probably only going to put more Babymetal or Yo La Tengo stuff in for 2017-19, but I will come back to it. Unless someone bribes me to desist.

We were ending at 2020..
I'll try to put up my contenders for the remaining years as soon as possible, so as to give you some other options outside of freaking BabyMetal
