I feel like I'm cheating here, but... it was recorded in Chicago (I think), for a Chicago label...

That vocal is incredible! The spoken bit just as much as the singing! And JH on guitar (not that it really matters).

Oh, yeah - I mean, I'm ready to dive in to this (previously unknown to me) period at full steam.

I'm stretching the definitions of soul for my next one, but it's always been a track I've loved and Donny was such a talent..

Picking a favorite or representative Soulful Strings track from one of their seven albums (I came in through their absolutely radical Christmas album, which I recommend heartily to all comers) is a lot like throwing a dart blindfolded. You're spoiled for choice, so you've got to just commit and move on. Indeed, the tracks that auto-played on YouTube afterwards were no less spectacular. I love the format (Chicago's grooviest soul/jazz rhythm section with classical instruments funking it up center stage), and I may bring them back before this is all over.

This is fantastic. I feel like they've uncorked at least another half dozen intriguing records.

First version I heard of this was the vocal hit by the Dovells, in 1963, and I loved that, although I was instantly converted to the original when I came across it finally on a comp. Because of this original exposure though I kind of assumed that Mr U, like the Dovells, was from Philly, otherwise I might have chosen it myself for this thread.

(I heard The Dovells first, too - and truth be told, I prefer their take. But they're both great.)
