We saw a show by Dix, Grosz and other Weimar-era German artists at the Tate Liverpool a while back, mainly sketches and drawings, but some fantastic stuff.
A friend of mine tells the story of how he was once discussing these artists with his girlfriend in a coffee shop, and she exclaimed loudly "OH, I LOVE DIX!".

In a slightly similar vein, though more impressionistic, I love Adolph Valette's paintings of Manchester. Manc still feels this way to me, the grime kinda clings to the air around the backstreets.

Robert Riggs "Dust Storm" Lithograph, ca. 1941 Just saw this on Antiques Roadshow. Old guy paid $15 for it in the '70s. Appraised for $15,000 on the show. It was an ad for air filters in the Saturday Evening Post.

I watched that Warhol Diaries series on Netflix and I was reminded how much I liked that "Death and Disaster" series. not the ones with dead bodies so much. I really like the skulls and electric chairs and all that stuff.

Since this is about all arts, let's list the ones that don't engage me at all: ballet (dance in general, really, with a very few exceptions), opera (no exceptions), theatre, advertising in any form, mime, anything involving audience participation. And the ones that have been important to me are prose, poetry, comics, film, TV, records, photography and fine art (mostly experienced in the form of reproductions. I really know nothing at all about sculpture. And as far as I am concerned, graphic design, architecture, cooking, jewellery, smithing, gardening, cabinet-making and so on, while they permit self-expression in one form or another, are basically crafts. Not that I think that sets them lower than arts: church and vernacular architecture, fine furniture and rugs are all favourite things with me.
Generally speaking, across all art forms, I prefer artworks to performance. I really don't like live music much, but love records: have been to the theatre less than a handful of times in my life, but loved going to the movies. Other preferences include maximalism over minimalism, riot over reverence, colour over form, comedy over tragedy I've had enough of both of those to last me a lifetime - sinuousity over symmetry, feeling over philosophy, and the big one that virtually encompasses all the others: Romanticism over Classicism.
That last one isn't an affectation, by the way, it's core: Keats's concept of negative capability, the sublime, the beauty of nature, the cultivation of wonder, all central to the way I live in the world, let alone appreciate art. I cant tell you how much I despise Classicism, the notions of order, rationality, the binary, the roots of fascism, rules for everything, proportionality, reserve. FUCK OFF THE LOT OF YOU.
I might have more to say about the visual arts, but that's more than enough typing for one day, even for an ex-Kelly Girl.
