Surprisingly although we have threads for photos and images, we've never had a thread for your favourite paintings... I just saw this on Fb it's not new to me, but I don't think I'd noticed the level of detail before. It's crazy! I think some people think Rockwell is kind of hokey, but this is a painting I could look at for a while. It's more about skill than imagination, I suppose (I think he mostly worked from photographs). Producing commercial art for magazine covers and the like might invalidate him in some folks' eyes, but he must have been one talented, dedicated dude to put together something like this.

Rockwell was ubiquitous for quite a whileI am sure his work is being poured over for how accurate was the US he shows (he did deal with racism ), slice of life guy, not really much different than Hopper except (interesting the founder of the American Nazi party who coined the term "White Power was also named Rockwell, though not related) not as hip, more populist/popular.

Edward Burra was an English painter who found himself in Harlem in the 30s. I'm a huge fan. He deserves to be better known. This one's called 'Zoot Suit'.

He may have had broadly the same subject matter as Hopper - the USA and its people – but technically miles apart, with Hopper all about absence, alienation, surfaces, timelessness and Rockwell's near photo-realist, involved and full of detail. Like them both, mind.

Yes! I think of him as the British Hopper in many ways, although obviously he predates him and paints in a different style, but there's the same sense of emptiness and solitude. I went to an exhibition of his work at The Guildhall about ten years ago which was wonderful.

I must have been 11 or 12 and my mom and dad took me to an Andrew Wyeth exhibition in San Francisco. They bought the book of his art too and I used to pore over it all the time. Art was appreciated in our house. My dad was a good pen and ink artist and created wood carvings and my mom took up painting later in life. I liked to paint and draw and I always got paper art pads and materials for birthdays and Christmas.

Bizarrely I once actually dreamt I was in this painting. I was afraid to go into the room where the musicians are.

I spent this afternoon walking on the South Downs near Cuckmere Haven, so the art of Eric Ravilious seems appropriate.

Funny thing art. You get these paintings and if you are lucky you might see them once, maybe in a crowded gallery or whatever, and that's it. The rest of the time it's a jpeg on your laptop screen. A bit like enjoying an album through the wall as it's played by a next door neighbour.
