I find him pretty empty to be honest and quite insular. People will say, "oh and this represents that" or whatever but I couldn't really give a shit. It appears to be mostly about him. He had huge skill mind and his paintings are often pleasant to look at so they at least work on that level but I've never been that fussed. Although I do like Christ of Saint John of the Cross at the Kelvingrove.

I think Dali's "greatest hits" are pretty irresistible - the melting clocks, the tigers, figures made out of weird stuff... there's also that "his own creation" element. you know how Hockney and Warhol are spoken of as having "invented themselves"?
well, who did the biggest bang up job of that?
