subtext throughout the thread: 'if you want to have a sensible discussion about this then you have to accept that the Beatles did no wrong. THEN we can discuss that other band' You know it Johnny boy . Nail on head.

THEN we can discuss that other band' No, it's what you want to project on it. If you wanted a more honest, warts and all, discussion of both bands you would have been better starting separate threads on both instead of pitching them against each other. As it is we've been forced into the defensive from the "Beatles were just a soppy pop group" brigade.

Do we need a “find fault with Beatles” thread as a tonic to their ubiquity?

Well Davey the hidden sex and drugs gender bending once hidden world is very much a visit you can relate to now. See... THAT is useful. That describes something really powerful about why someone would hold The VU up!

Sounds (and reads)to me that Beatles fans are completely unaware that to many that what hits the pleasure zone isn't necessarily the Beatles. Actually, Dylan suffers from the academics and super fans more and yet it seems to boil down to be a case of whether you like his voice or not. My favourite Beatle songs are , I've got a feeling , Hey Bulldog and Helter Skelter. Pre Revolver it's the same record again and again with little innovative game changing music. They took a long time to get going and got better when they wanted to be a straight up rock band Truth is their hands more often than not were tied by having Lionel Bart on bass. You're (I'm assuming it's Jimboo I'm talking to) into krautrock and art rock, like Darkness Fish. You're both a bit distrustful of pop and don't necessarily look for melody in things. Basically the more you're into pop and melody, the more you like The Beatles. Not really. I prefer Odessa to Pepper and I love Abba.Good pop is an art form it's wonderful.I don't dislike the Beatles at all. Yes, I like Black midi and Le Mystere Does Voix Bulgares and Les Rallies Denudes etc ,etc while I deliberately scour blogs and Spotify for the more obscure and left field. John is alluding to my main bugbear that the Beatles are the alpha and omega of popular culture. I find music sounds more interesting when they are not a bands point of reference. It's a bit mystifying to be pigeon holed as being distrustful of mainstream music because I don't rate the fabs as highly as many on here. Since most of us were kids in their pomp it feels to me that before we gravitated towards peel and the old grey whistle test the fabs are a family orientated live from the grand ole opry memory jolt.People are now arguing that wax records are the best way to listen to music when the truth is we dumped them en masse when digital arrived. It's an old friend, you know all the words (who doesn't).Beatles movies on at Xmas , on the radio when there was no daytime t.v etc. I get the association and love.

It's nothing to do with nostalgia for me. Sure there was a period when I listened to them less while I discovered other stuff, but I always returned because their music had the depth and imagination and sheer likeability to keep me coming back. They are still the benchmark for an art that offers a radical adventurousness with an open hearted generosity in equal measure. I don't see them as some adolescent staging post before you get into more substantial stuff, I see them as the apex.

Most of us could write in-depth about their missteps. Demonstrably untrue. Here's one that certainly would! Let go of your blind devotion just for an hour or two! it might do yer brain some good!

I LOVE the Beatles! you know that. I fell in love with them as a boy, I've got all their albums, they still knock me out (I understand this isn't anything special to people here, but anyway - just giving some background...). I just don't think they were perfect. And I honestly find it odd that fans quite clearly feel uncomfortable discussing their flaws. Either that, or they really don't think they had any. I don't know which is more ridiculous.
