I LOVE the Beatles! you know that. I fell in love with them as a boy, I've got all their albums, they still knock me out (I understand this isn't anything special to people here, but anyway - just giving some background...). I just don't think they were perfect. And I honestly find it odd that fans quite clearly feel uncomfortable discussing their flaws. Either that, or they really don't think they had any. I don't know which is more ridiculous. I do know that. But I also know that you are, generally speaking, ballad-adverse. In fact I could swear you've criticized the Velvets' 'softer' songs almost as vehemently as you have the Beatles'. Fair to argue that the Beatles, with Paul aboard, have more of them - I guess. But what I love about both bands is that the range from hard to soft gives both ends more emotional resonance (at least to my ears). That's a very basic, simplified way of putting it, and of course there's all kinds of variation within that, but it's no accident that my two favorite bands (and probably most of the top ten - it's also very true of the Doors, for example) share that quality. But just for fun (and since you asked), here are some Beatle criticisms: 1) Love Me Do was a dull and rather limited debut single - they had far better material that would have showcased their talents better. It remains one of my least favorite Beatles songs (yes, I am the anti-Rayge in this respect too). 2) I remain bewildered why anyone in their camp would push for "Mr. Moonlight" over "Leave My Kitten Alone." 3) Early stereo mixes kind of sucked - instruments one side, vocals on the other? I mean, I guess mono was far more common and where they put their emphasis, but why even bother if you're gonna half-ass it that much? 4) There are moments of extreme lyrical laziness - mostly Paul, but all of them - from the very beginning. I still cringe at the presents/peasant line and wonder how that one got past the rest of them. 5) No other band insisted that the entire band had to have at least one vocal performance per record. While I also love this - I feel like George developed as a songwriter a little more quickly due to this - it also resulted in some skippable songs, particularly in the beginning. Does that help?

George looked terrible with a beard. Aged him horribly.
Let It Be/Get It Back...what the fuck was all that about?
MMT...a bit half arsed, a bit shoddy, a psychedelic breakfast but not in a good way

There’s a thread for these critiques.
Let’s give John a happy place.

We've had loads of threads on BCB on their worst songs, biggest mistakes etc over the years. You're grouchy because your beloved Velvets are losing, you were the same with The Velvets v Beach Boys thread...remember?

We've had loads of threads on BCB on their worst songs, biggest mistakes etc over the years. Simply not true. And I'm not grouchy - do you honestly think I expected this poll to go any other way? I just find it odd that people feel a bit dirty if they even consider putting the band down. It's an odd one. I wonder if in 20 years time it'll be the same? I imagine not.

But if I'm making the argument on why I love The Beatles, or think they're better, above one of the best bands of all time, then I'm hardly going to make that argument by talking about The Beatles weaknesses. That just wouldn't make sense.

Whoa, take it easy Hatz , you are practically systematically destroying their catalogue here.

No, but if I had a couple of kids I'd probably say things like 'they're both sweethearts but Bingo can be a bit insensitive at times and Bongo isn't eating a varied enough diet'
