Mingus WORSHIPED Ellington - Duke was easily his greatest influence as a composer. I'm not so clear on what Ellington really thought of Mingus. An interviewer once said something to him about Mingus being a composer that was carrying on his tradition (or something like that), and Duke replied "Well, that's what he says." Wasn't Mingus very briefly in Ellington's orchestra, getting canned over some outburst or something? Yeah, here it is.

Wasn't Mingus very briefly in Ellington's orchestra, getting canned over some outburst or something? Yeah, here it is. Thanks for that - I'd read Mingus' account before, but not Terry's or Tizol's. That has Mingus' big thumbprints all over it. There's no way that came out of anybody's mouth in the moment!
There was another incident during the same brief stint. I don't recall the other musician's name, but he was an Italian-American and Mingus tried to shame him, accusing him of "doing a black man out of a job." To which the swarthy Sicilian countered: "Mingus, I'm darker than you." Mingus had to be pulled off him.

As a postscript to that last story: a decade or so later Mingus was doing a radio interview and was complaining about racism, "white devils", etc. The interviewer said "But you have a white musician in your band, Charlie Mariano." Mingus said "Mariano? He's okay, he's not white, he's Italian!"

i could never part with it.
i paid over the odds for this, though. a three-figure sum before discogs and in the 80s too.

I absolutely love The Monochrome Set, the expanded edition of Eligible Bachelors has been played to death for me this year. Bid is the Morrissey it's ok to like.
