Putin playing sneaky buggers isn't he?
I don't think it'll come to war but he's certainly putting pressure on the EU and NATO to do something, namely sign that Nordstream 2 Pipeline stuff. And then he'll really be laughing.

He's not just canny, he is supremely intelligent.
What he has, of course, is the ability to essentially do what he wants, particularly within the context of governing a country. He does not have a media or other institutions holding him to account.
I think, to a certain extent, that you have to view how Russia views the world and how it was treated after the Cold War when taking into consideration the actions Putin takes. It was, of course, utterly humiliated by the West and the 10 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union were an absolute disaster. Putin is an exceptionally effective leader in essentially being the person that many Russians want - a strongman. Russians are used to strong men as leaders, and Putin is a belligerent one.
Russia is neither part of Asia nor is it part of Europe. It is its own place, with a powerful history and geography. It is arguably surrounded by countries that are oppositional to it. If your country was surrounded on one side by a web of countries bound together by a military alliance solely designed to stop you, it is no wonder that you might feel somewhat indignant by it.
Obviously, that doesn't excuse Russia's action. Personally, given that their economy is pretty much based on selling resources, entering into conflicts is problematic for them. I suspect that there might be some sort of limited action because it worked in Georgia and the Crimea, and the rest of the world is not interested.

You may laugh, but he's in a great position. He knows NATO can realistically do very little about him and he has sat on a big fat gas supply that the West is extremely reliant on. When you wonder why your gas costs are going to double soon, then you will know why.

since MBS won't "flood the market" to lower prices this may give Putin a unique advantage.

Generally sympathetic towards Putin and Russia, especially with regard to the western fake news re Trump and the Skripals, etc., but yesterday I was hiking up Mt. Takao (a popular hike) when I said hello to a foreigner who said he was from Russia. Talking and walking we seemed to agree that the corona situation was fucked up so I asked how it was in Russia. Not good he said, with vaccine mandates and passports and masks, much stricter than Japan is (today). Huh, I had thought Putin would be more Jimbo-ish on the matter but this guy said no. We soon parted at a way station (he may have been sick of my bullshit) but then I thought he was too rough on my boy Putin. Coincidentally, I get back home and dial up my favorite anti-corona narrative site and there is a new article, "Myth vs. reality in COVID Russia It’s time to part ways with the conscience-soothing fairytales", and sure enough, according to the article, Russia is as fucked or more than any place today. off-guardian.org/2021/11/16/myth-vs-reality-in-covid-russia/
