Were they not more advanced up to a certain point before Europe basically took over? We were behind the curve up until the giant leap forward with the renaissance etc? I may be wrong but it's my understanding that China went a bit insular at some point and it harmed their development as a civilisation. I don't know if they were but if they were in what respect? Where are the Chinese Rembrands, the Einsteins, the Beethovens? Or pre renaissance, The Aristotles, the Platos, or the mathematicians? Just because most of the western world is unaware of China's cultural history doesn't mean it doesn't exist. For example, at the auction house where I work in Toronto, we're just about to have a large sale of Asian art and antiques, and from experience most of the buyers will be of Asian heritage, if not actual people from China, Japan, etc, who will have lots shipped back overseas. With few exceptions Western folks rarely collect this stuff, except for the odd decorative item here and there to stick on a wall, or plunk in a corner. www.waddingtons.ca/auction/asian-art-dec-02-2021/gallery/

Inventions. Paper, china, fireworks, all that stuff. Tea. Printing. 12th century. Yes they did all that and I was not completely fair with my 'where are the Chinese philosophers?'. There are obviously plenty of them. But I don't see any overriding superiority, not even if I would even think in such terms. Mathematics originate from I think Iran ( or at least somehwere in the middle east) During China's 'reign' in days of old, the Egyptian were building their pyramids Electricity, the US. What do we get these days from China? Cheap shit, often made by prisoners and/or children. Dumped on us with heavily subsidised transport.

But how many people go to China to study classical (chinese) music and how much Chinese come here to study 'our' classical music? It's not impossible to be aware of the other's culture but for all the alleged superiority of Chinathat seems to go only one way.

I can't recall where I heard it, something on youtube, but I think it was in relation to where Europe was at during the dark ages in comparison to China. They had a far superior navy, they had invented the printing press etc whilst we were struggling.

I'm not sure I would've chosen the word "superiority", because there's a rich tradition of craftsmanship from both East and West during the same time periods. I think, and this is just my opinion, that in the case of music, Western tastes just aren't very accepting of Asian classical or traditional music, with the possible exception of Indian classical.

Couldn't you argue that from the Renaissance up to the ninety fifties we were Usain bolt racing a bowl of shark fin soup? I mean you invent the wheel , cool. The real innovation is the motor that goes on to make cars and trains and shit. Fireworks to tanks. We win.

What he has, of course, is the ability to essentially do what he wants, particularly within the context of governing a country. He does not have a media or other institutions holding him to account. As have we. Where do you live?

Would you recommend it to Coan? Oh god Johnny would love it!! The food would have him salivating and he could wander the wide open spaces literally at his door. I can imagine him astride a horse bareback.

Whilst it is true that the West has had a very big grip on the global imagination for the last 200 years, it strikes me that we are probably in the autumnal years of that era. The cultural dominance of Hollywood and western music, for example, is most likely on the decline.
Asia doesn't look to the West like it used to. Yes, we don't go to Asia either, but I imagine that China will reassert itself as the cultural magnet for Asia/Pacific et al from now on.

Yeah. I can forsee a time when Visigoth™ international and the Carpathian corporation are the world's biggest players following the mass destruction of the EU block. The once mighty UN destroyed by emperor putinius III and pressure from the Xeres association of companies leading to a new world order.
